Huskers sweep Kansas

Lincoln -- Middle blockers Amber Holmquist and Melissa Elmer combined for 16 blocks and 21 kills on a .724 hitting percentage to lead the No. 5 Nebraska volleyball team to a 30-22, 30-25, 30-15 win over Kansas before 4,049 fans at the NU Coliseum Wednesday night.

Holmquist, a senior from Houston, Texas, tallied a season-high 16 kills on a .700 clip while adding 11 blocks for her second double-double of the year. Elmer, a redshirt freshman from Fort Wayne, Ind., posted seven kills and zero errors on nine attacks for a season-best .778 hitting percentage.

Holmquist and Elmer led Nebraska to a season-high 18 blocks, and NU held Kansas to a .107 hitting percentage.

With the victory, the Huskers improved to 25-1 overall and 7-0 in the conference, and NU secured its 10th consecutive 25-win season.

“If we execute well and Greicha sets the ball high, Kansas isn’t going to be able to stop it because they physically can’t match up with Amber and Melissa,” NU Coach John Cook said.

Kansas Coach Ray Bechard was impressed with Holmquist and Elmer.

“Holmquist is the the best middle blocker in the country, no doubt about that,” Bechard said. “There’s a certain height she hits at and the angles she goes for -- you can’t do anything about it. And I think everyone forgets about Elmer. When they get into their system, it’s very difficult to stop their middles.”

Nebraska also received impressive performances from seniors Greichaly Cepero and Laura Pilakowski. Cepero finished two kills shy of a triple-double, but posted her seventh double-double of the season with 34 assists, 11 digs, seven blocks and eight kills on a .500 hitting percentage. Pilakowski totaled 14 kills while swinging at a .423 clip.

Elmer had the hot hand in game one, when she recorded a team-high five kills on seven attacks and was in on both of NU’s blocks. Kansas cut Nebraska’s lead to 21-19 with an ace serve by Jennifer Kraft. But NU scored five of the next eight points to take a 26-21 advantage. Freshman right side hitter Jennifer Saleaumua secured the 30-22 win with her fourth kill of the game.

“We sputtered a little at the beginning, and started on a bad note,” Cook said. “I can’t remember a team that’s served us that tough in a while. Kansas is a very good serving team.”

In game two, NU took over at the net with six blocks, all of which Holmquist had a hand in. NU maintained at least a four-point lead until Sutherland, Neb., native Kylie Thomas closed the gap to 25-22 with a kill. But Holmquist dominated down the stretch with three kills in the Huskers last four points. Pilakowski closed the game with a kill.

In game three, sophomore outside hitter Ally Rebholz served 11 straight points to give Nebraska a 14-2 lead. The Huskers were never threatened after that.

Sarah Rome posted a team-best 12 kills for Kansas, which fell to 18-8 overall and 9-8 in the Big 12.

The Huskers return to action Saturday, Nov. 24 when they travel to Waco, Texas, for a 2 p.m. match against Baylor.
