Huskers sweep Texas Tech
Lubbock, TX -- Laura Pilakowski pounded a match-high 15 kills
to lead the No. 2 Nebraska volleyball team to a 30-12, 30-19, 30-25 win
over Texas Tech at the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock, Texas. The junior
outside hitter committed one error on 25 attacks for a .560 hitting percentage
while adding seven digs.
Senior right side
hitter Nancy Metcalf totaled 15 kills for the Huskers, and junior setter
Greichaly Cepero tallied 37 assists and seven digs. Defensively, senior
middle blocker Jenny Kropp produced a match-high 11 blocks for NU as
the Huskers out-blocked Texas Tech, 18-5. Nebraska also held the Red
Raiders to a .000 hitting percentage.
With the victory,
the Huskers improved to 17-1 overall and 10-0 in the Big 12 and extended
their streak of consecutive wins to 15. Nebraska, which has won 45 of
its last 46 games, also extended its streak of consecutive conference
victories to 40.
Freshman outside
hitter Kelly Johnson tallied seven kills for Texas Tech, which fell
to 12-7 overall and 5-5 in the league.
“I was very proud
of the way we came out tonight,” Nebraska Coach John Cook said. “We
followed the game plan perfectly. Our blocking was great. Our passing
was great. I was very pleased.”
Nebraska held Texas
Tech to just 12 points in game one, the lowest single-game scoring output
by a Husker opponent this season. Sara Westling served the first nine
points of the game for NU before Heather Hughes-Justice finally stopped
the opening run with a kill. The senior outside hitter made it 19-6
later with her second kill of the game, but it would not get closer
than that. Pilakowski and Metcalf each produced three kills down the
stretch, and Kropp slammed her second kill of the match for the 30-12
win.
The Red Raiders
bounced back in game two. Nebraska led 10-8 when Johnson notched three
straight kills to give Tech an 11-10 advantage, its first lead of the
match. The Huskers began to pull away, though, after Metcalf recorded
back-to-back kills to give NU a 22-15 lead. Nebraska widened its lead
to nine with a barrage of kills by Anna Schrad, Cepero and Holmquist.
Cepero and Holmquist combined to block Johnson to force a game-point
situation. Pilakowski clinched the 30-19, second-game win two rallies
later with her fifth kill of the match.
In game three, Nebraska
trailed early again but tied the scored at 9-9 after Pilakowski pounded
a kill off the Texas Tech block. The Nebraska opened a three-point lead
after a Texas Tech hitting error, but the Red Raiders tied it at 17
after two Husker hitting errors and a kill by Johnson. The score was
tied two more times before Pilakowski sparked a 4-0 run with a kill
to make it 23-19 NU. The Red Raiders pulled within one after kills by
Samantha Harvey and Stacey Poole, but Amber Holmquist accounted for
three straight points with two kills and a block to make it 28-24, Nebraska.
The Huskers finally took the 30-25 third-game victory and the match
on a kill by Schrad.
Nebraska returns
to action Wednesday, Nov. 24, when it travels to Columbia, Mo., to take
on Missouri. The Tigers were 15-4 overall and 6-4 in the Big 12 entering
the weekend.
