Nebraska sweeps Creighton
Lincoln -- The top-ranked
Nebraska volleyball team relied on a dominant defensive performance to
defeat Creighton 30-15, 30-21, 30-22, Tuesday night in front of 3,867
fans at the NU Coliseum. The Huskers (8-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12
Conference) held CU to a .009 hitting percentage, as no Bluejays hit better
than .167. Nebraska also out-blocked Creighton, 12.0-3.5.
Offensively, junior
outside hitter Laura Pilakowski led Nebraska with 12 kills, while senior
right side hitter Nancy Metcalf and sophomore outside hitter Anna Schrad
added 10. The Huskers hit .254 on the night, and junior setter Greichaly
Cepero posted 37 assists and a match-high 13 digs.
Nebraska Coach John
Cook gave the Huskers performance a mixed review. Cook played
a season-high 12 players in the match, including sophomore middle blocker
Sara Westling (three kills, .333 hitting percentage) and sophomore defensive
specialist Jenae Dowling (four digs).
When you play
a lot of people (off the bench), its hard to keep a good rhythm
going, Cook said. But at the same time, the team needs to
know what kind of level we expect to play at. At times, we look very
sharp, but Creighton is a different type of team than we have faced.
We were used to their style of play.
I thought
Creighton played very good defense. They didnt let many balls
hit the floor. They are much better than they were last year.
After struggling
in the first game -- when they hit just minus - .147 -- Creighton took
early leads in the second and third games. The Bluejays took their largest
lead of the match in the third, going up 7-2 after kills from Ashley
Williams and Lisa Meekins. But Nebraska out-scored CU, 8-3, and tied
the game at 10 after a kill by Westling. The game was tied three more
times before the Huskers finished the match with a 7-0 run.
Melissa Walsh led
Creighton (4-7) with eight kills, while Meekins and Erin Swanson added
six.
We had some
things we wanted to do, and we got them done, Creighton Coach
Howard Wallace said. I was really happy with the effort and the
energy and the mentality of our team.
Nebraska returns
to action Wednesday, Sept. 26, when it plays host to Iowa State at 7
p.m. The match will be televised on NETV2.
