I have no problem with Lawrie getting a couple of games vacation for losing his temper with this meltdown but this is a perfect example of umps in baseball being too powerful.

It is not the umpires job to discipline a player period. The 3-1 pitch was a joke. Because Lawrie showed the ump up on that pitch, the ump calls the 3-2 pitch a strike as well.

I would like to see major league umps suspended and fined for this behavior. Any thoughts?

You know Glenn Reynolds makes a good point when he says the people who say they’re spiritual, but not religious are basically giving license to their instincts. They’re basically saying that if it feels good do it. I want to pursue my own gut desires or sexual desires and religion works exactly the opposite way. Religion serves to constrain the excesses of human nature, to make us better than just animals walking upright.

And every so often you find in popular culture this whole idea that spirituality is something to extol and explore and celebrate and it’s wonderful and karma and crystals and reincarnation and all these wonderful things that are in tune with nature. At the same time, the same people who buy all this stuff say, “Oh, I don’t understand why those Catholics are so superstitious. I don’t understand why those Christians believe that crazy stuff.” What’s so infuriating about it is that Christianity and certainly Judaism has spent a long time thinking through spirituality and trying to codify it and understand it and channel it to make men better than they were born to be. Yet, there is a smug, self-satisfaction among the champions of spirituality who think that all of these people who came before them and dedicated their lives to thinking these issues through were idiots. They think they can figure it all out if they just sit in a yoga position.
With money advanced by the band, each person had enough to buy eight tickets at $49.95 apiece for the group’s show in July. Once all tickets were in hand, almost 400 of them, they were carried back to String Cheese headquarters in Colorado and put on sale again through the group’s Web site — for $49.95.

“We’re scalping our own tickets at no service charge,” Mike Luba, one of the group’s managers, explained in an interview last week. “It’s ridiculous.”

I've been working on this for some time now. I'm planning to writing this up and submitting it to the Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports. I'll publish a more thorough explanation of my methodology on my blog within the next couple of weeks. For now, he's the quicky version.

The inputs to the model are:

Strength of Schedule (shamelessly lifted from Sagarin)
Conference Average Margin of Victory
Team Margin of Victory
Scoring Defense (points per game)
Scoring Offense (points per game)
TO Margin per game

All data other than strength of schedule is directly downloaded from the NCAA stats repository. The raw statistics are normalized by subtracting each team's statistic from the average of all 120 teams and dividing that by the standard deviation of the 120 teams.

Using data from 709 played in 2011, a multiple regression model was performed with the 6 inputs as the independent variables and a teams actual margin of victory in a game as the independent variable. Each game was entered in the model twice...each team is evaluated independently. This provided a regression model with 1417 df.

The base model has an r-squared of .636.

With the computed regression equation I can run a simulated season in which every team (i) plays every other team (j). A positive predicted y-value means that a team is predicted win, a negative predicted y-value means that a team is predicted to lose. There are 14280 (i,j) combinations. After the model is run, all that is left to do is total up the number of predicted wins to establish a 1-n ranking of all 120 teams. Using the data from 2011, the following is how my model ranked all 120 BCS teams. I'm pretty comfortable with the results.

My plan is to publish a weekly ranking here and on my blog this Fall. I'm open to comments, and if anyone is interested, I'll need a few folks to read through my paper when I'm done with the draft version.
