The Wolverines (13-8, 6-3 Big Ten) used a balanced attack despite being without Derrick Walton Jr. because of injury, as Zak Irvin had 14 points and 12 boards while Aubrey Dawkins and Max Bielfelt had 13 and 12 points, respectively for the winners
Dawkins had all 13 of his points in the first half, as Michigan built a 23-18 lead at the break before jumping on the Huskers by scoring 15 of the first 17 points in the second half to build an 18-point lead.
Shavon Shields led NU (12-8, 4-4 Big Ten) with 14 points, but was the only Husker in double figures. Terran Petteway was held to seven points, snapping a streak of 30 straight games in double figures, as the Huskers were held to a season-low 44 points.
Michigan got off to a quick start in the second half, hitting its first four shots from the field in an 8-2 run to build its largest lead at 31-20 and force a Husker timeout. Michigan, which hit five of its first six shots of the half, extended the margin to 15 at the under 16 media timeout, as Nebraska missed its first four shots from the field in the half.
Nebraska trailed 38-20 after an Irvin 3-pointer before starting a comeback. Petteway, who was held scoreless for the first 25 minutes, hit a 3-pointer to trigger a 92-2 run as the Huskers scored six straight point as a Benny Parker layup cut the deficit to 11.
Michigan came right back with five straight points from Muhammed-Ali Abdur-Rahkman, pushing the lead back to 16 at 45-29 and forcing a timeout. Nebraska battled back with five straight points after a 3-pointer from Tarin Smith pulled NU within 45-35 with 8:19 left. Nebraska continued to chip away, pulling to within 47-39 after a Shields layup with 5:53 left.
Smith provided a nice spark off the bench with eight points and seven boards, tying personal bests in both categories.
Nebraska would eventually cut the Michigan lead to 10 after a pair of Petteway free throws with 4:09 left, but would not get any closer. Zak Irvin's 3-point play and a Bielfeldt dunk quickly pushed it back to 15 points.
The Huskers were ice cold from the floor in the first half, hitting just 26 percent from the floor in trailing 23-18 at the break. The Huskers led 5-3 after a Benny Parker 3-pointer, but Michigan went on a 10-1 spurt, including a pair of 3-pointers, to take a 13-6 lead after a Max Bielfeldt jumper.
Nebraska, which hit just two of its first 11 shots from the floor, ended the run with a basket by Leslee Smith scored eight of the next nine points to get within 15-13 after a David Rivers putback. Aubrey Dawkins, who had 13 first-half points, hit a 3-pointer to begin a 5-0 run before a jumper by Tarin Smith and a 3-pointer from Shields cut the margin back to two points, at 20-18. Dawkins, who was 3-of-3 from long range, hit a 3-pointer from the corner to take a five-point lead into the locker room.
The Huskers return to action Saturday night, as they take on Minnesota. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. and the game will be on BTN and the Husker Sports Network.
