Cats Nip Huskers in OT: Tanner Lee’s pass across the middle on 4th-and-12 in overtime was deflected by Northwestern safety Kyle Queiro to give the visiting Wildcats their third consecutive overtime win with a 31-24 victory over Nebraska.

The Huskers led 24-17 after three quarters, but Clayton Thorson’s seven-yard touchdown run with 5:32 left in regulation capped a 13-play, 84-yard drive that tied the score at 24.

Both teams had a chance to win in regulation, with Nebraska moving more than 50 yards on the ensuing drive before stalling near the Northwestern 40. Thorson and the Wildcats moved near the Nebraska 40, but his Hail Mary pass was batted out of the back of the North end zone as time expired.

When it came to winning time, the Huskers got whipped pretty soundly in overtime.

It is harder now than ever to see this season as anything other than Riley’s last in Lincoln.

It wasn’t too long ago when winning a game at Memorial Stadium was one of the most daunting tasks a visiting opponent could face in a season. Well, not anymore.

All the Huskers can do is try to make the best of the last three games of the regular season. That starts next week at Minnesota.

It is worth noting that despite its season-long struggles, Nebraska is still a competitive team to watch.

There are no surprises anymore with Nebraska football. The only surprise left would be if Mike Riley is back as head coach next season.

The loss could have bigger implications than a potential bowl game as Riley fights to keep his job.

The onset of apathy is especially troubling. That's when you think change is probably necessary.

Days like Saturday have become the new normal. Fans show up and expect bad football. It’s not too much to ask for more.

Omaha World-Herald
Callahan

Yes, there were some positive moments and plays, but the issues this football team has fought in 2017 all showed up in different ways on Saturday.

HuskerOnline
Stryker

There’s not an ounce of killer instinct in Riley or his football team. The Huskers have lost any ability they once had to take control of a football game.

Nebraska is making the same mistakes over and over again. It’s struggling in the same areas of the game every week.
