Blackshirts smother Jayhawks

The Huskers used a suffocating defense to secure their third straight nine-win season under coach Bo Pelini, holding Kansas to 87 yards of total offense in a 20-3 victory over the Jayhawks.

Freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez returned to the starting lineup to guide a Nebraska offense that rolled up 397 total yards but lacked its usual explosiveness. Each of NU’s four scoring drives lasted at least nine plays, covered at least 40 yards and lasted at least 3:40.

The Husker defense made sure the first-half touchdown runs by Rex Burkhead and Roy Helu Jr. were more than enough for the victory. Kansas quarterback Quinn Mecham was held to 15 yards on 3-of-13 passing with one interception. He was also sacked him six times for 28 yards in losses.

The pass defense has been good all year, and now the run defense may be coming around.

Martinez returned to the starting lineup. His speed is still playing catch-up.

If you're Nebraska, you take this win, wrap a tidy bow around it today, and move on quickly.

If you look closely, you can see a foundation being laid that figures to bode well for the Jayhawks.

This was not an entertaining sendoff.

Husker Mike

Since Martinez left the Missouri game, the Husker offense has seemed to stagnate.

The Husker offense was adequate at best, but on this night that was enough.

Shawn Watson's bunch rolled up 397 yards, but you almost wish he had dialed down his plan, too.
