Reds overcome slow start

Nebraska ended the 2009 spring practice season as Zac Lee connected on 15 of 18 pass attempts, including three touchdown tosses, to lead the Husker Red team to a 31-17 win in the annual Red-White Spring Game.

The Whites dominated the first quarter but managed just three points on the scoreboard, then extended its lead to 10-0 with five minutes left in the second quarter as converted linebacker Latravis Washington guided the offense.

But the Red offense answered with a seven-play, 73-yard drive that ended with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Lee to Marcus Mendoza with 1:23 left in the half.

On the first play after the ensuing kickoff, Terrence Moore ripped the ball out of Lester Ward’s hands, and the Reds recovered. Two plays later, Lee found Ben Cotton in the middle of the field for a 24-yard score, giving the Reds a 14-10 halftime lead.

A 40-yard scoring pass from Lee to Wes Cammack about three minutes into the third quarter put the Reds ahead by 21-10, and the Whites would get no closer the rest of the way.

Zac Lee is your starter this fall, barring injury or the wheels coming off in some other unforeseen way. Lee looked composed and was productive.
