Air game clicks in win over Iowa

Behind a school-record tying five touchdown passes by quarterback Eric Crouch, top-ranked Nebraska improved to 3-0 on the season with a 42-13 win over Iowa in front of a Memorial Stadium record crowd of 78,070.

Crouch competed 10 of 13 passes for 159 yards and five scores, tying the school record also held by Steve Taylor against UCLA in 1987. Tracey Wistrom also tied a school record with three TD catches.

Crouch had three of his TDs in before intermission, including a 43-yarder to split end Matt Davison on the final play of the first half, giving the Huskers a 21-13 halftime lead. Davison caught the pass at the Iowa 5 and avoided a pair of Hawkeyes en route to the end zone.

The Huskers extended the lead to 28-13 on their opening drive of the second half, which covered 86 yards in eight plays.

The Huskers also were able to run effectively, as Dan Alexander and Correll Buckhalter both topped the 100-yard mark.

Commentary

Colonel Mustard

Iowa ran delayed drag patterns all day. They are slow-developing and worked because of a lack of pressure.

Shatel

Give NU's offense a passing grade. But not the Blackshirts. The problem was pressure. There was none early.

Omaha World-Herald
McKeever

Iowa, not a good team, was doing to the Huskers what it had done to its previous three opponents - making things ugly.

Lincoln Journal Star
Red Clad Loon

The national rap on Crouch - he runs like a deer, but he throws like one, too - was effectively squelched with his record-tying day.

Douglass

Eric Crouch and the Cornhusker offense served notice Saturday that they're not just about running the football anymore.

If Iowa can put together Nebraska-esque drives and consume 29:12 of possession time, what will better teams do?
