Aggies snuff out Huskers’ win streak

The second-ranked Huskers mounted a rally from a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit but fell short as No. 18 Texas A&M held on for a 28-21 upset in College Station.

A&M scored late in the second quarter to take 14-7 lead into halftime. On the Huskers’ first possession of the second half, the Aggies sacked Nebraska quarterback Bobby Newcombe on three consecutive plays. The final one forced a fumble that the Aggies recovered in the end zone to take a 21-7 lead.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Ja’Mar Toombs scored on a 3-yard run to give the Aggies a seemingly insurmountable 28-7 lead.

Nebraska rallied back, closing to gap to 28-21 on an 11-yard run by Newcombe and a nine-yard score by fullback Joel Makovicka with 4:39 remaining. After forcing the Aggies to punt, the Huskers drove to the NU 40 before Newcombe was picked off by Sedrick Curry in the final minute to end Nebraska’s comeback bid.

Nebraska split end Matt Davison had a school-record 167 receiving yards, including 112 in the fourth quarter.

The Huskers allowed a 259 rushing yards, the most by a Nebraska opponent since 1993.

The loss ended the Huskers’ 19-game winning streak and 40-game regular-season conference winning streak.

Commentary

Colonel Mustard

Why not give Crouch and Buckhalter more snaps to let Bobby and DeAngelo get healthy?

Mabry

It was not Newcombe’s fault that the second-ranked Cornhuskers fell to Texas A&M 28-21. Far from it. He did all he could to pull this one out.

There was little doubt from the outset that the scene at Kyle Field reeked of upset.

Defenses are getting the picture. They’re stuffing the run. Gotta throw, baby. Gotta throw.
