Huskers rally for win with backup QB Christo

Senior walk-on quarterback Monte Christo rallied No. 7 Nebraska from a 7-point second-half deficit as the Huskers upended No. 19/18 Missouri, 20-13, in a rematch of last season’s classic.

Christo, replacing an injured Bobby Newcombe, rushed for 67 yards on 20 carries and scored on runs of one and three yards as the Huskers trailed 13-6 at halftime before regrouping.

The Blackshirts held the Tigers to 166 total yards and 10 first downs. Linebacker Jay Foreman posted 13 tackles and a sack. Missouri tailback Devin West, the nation’s No. 2 rusher, was held to 72 yards, 120 below his average, as the MU ground attack mustered just 77 yards.

After a Christo fumble near midfield with 1:38 left in the game, the Tigers drove to the Nebraska 22 with the help of two fourth-down conversions. With four seconds remaining, Missouri wide receiver John Dausman couldn’t haul in a Corby Jones pass to the corner of the end zone. On the next play, linebacker Eric Johnson’s 10-yard sack of Jones ended the game and any thoughts of overtime.

Commentary

Colonel Mustard

We attacked the line and let Corby try to beat us, and he couldn’t. This was the real Corby, not the game of his life we saw last year.

No longer does watching the Cornhuskers compare to viewing a typical ‘A-Team’ episode. Folks, we really have no idea how these things are going to turn out anymore.

Nebraska held on, but not without sounding a Big Red alert and sparking a controversy.
