A fantastic 51-yard field goal by-Nebraska Sophomore Paul Rogers with only 21 seconds left in the game brought a sensational 13-10 victory over Wyoming in the 1968 opener.
Rogers' boot—his second field goal of the day—capped a great Husker comeback before a wildly cheering throng of 65,018 fans, as well as thousands of Wyoming fans who watched the sellout on TV.
Sharing honors with Rogers was Senior quarterback Ernie Sigler, who came off the bench in the third quarter to skipper the Huskers back from a 10-3 deficit to a rousing victory.
Sigler was supposed to be a back-up man for passing star Frank Patrick, but the unheralded senior came in to take away the starting job and held on to it for the entire season.
Wyoming jumped to a 3-0 lead on a 35-yard field goal with 8:26 left in the first quarter, and with 6:13 left in the opening frame Cowboy quarterback Ed Synakowski tossed a 54-yard TD pass to Gene Huey and Wyoming had the Cornhuskers stunned with a 10-0 lead.
Late in the first period Rogers got NU back in the game with a 26-yard field goal, but the Husker attack sputtered until Sigler got the Scarlets rolling early in the fourth quarter.
Starting on the NU 29, Sigler took the Huskers 71 yards in 9 plays and threw a 17-yard TD pass to Jim McFarland to set up a 10-10 tie with 10:46 left in the game.
Late in the game, the Huskers got the ball at the Cowboy 36, drove to the 15 and were thrown and penalized back to the 34. Then, with only 21 seconds left, Sigler set the ball on the 41 and Rogers boomed it high into the north stands for a record and a victory that triggered a mob scene as the Husker bench emptied onto the field to swarm Sigler and Rogers.
