Rebuilding Nebraska was really an unknown quantity against favored Washington in the 1967 opener, but the Cornhuskers pulled off a 17-7 victory in rousing fashion before 57,481 fans.
Recovering a fumbled punt in the first quarter, the Huskers drove 33 yards to score in nine plays. The next time they got the ball, rookie quarterback Frank Patrick — with the aid of a 31-yard pass to Dennis Morrison — took the Scarlets 43 yards to score in another nine plays.
But the Huskies weren't stunned by a 14-0 deficit and three plays after the kickoff, quarterback Tom Sparlin tore through Nebraska's vaunted defense 48 yards for a TD.
Bill Bomberger's 20-yard field goal just before the half wound up the scoring.
