K-State evens series with 3-2 win.

Lincoln, Neb — Jared King's eighth inning solo home run broke up a tied game and led Kansas State (20-14, 5-9) to a 3-2 win over Nebraska (23-14, 4-7) on Sunday afternoon at Hawks Field. The Huskers edged the Wildcats in the series opener by the same 3-2 final to set up Monday's rubber match at 1:05 p.m.

"This was the same type of ball game we had yesterday," head coach Mike Anderson said. "Both teams played well. There were a couple of things that got us. I looked at our hitters and we had some good line drives and I thought we played good defense. We had well hit balls and controlled what we could control. We didn't get anything out of it but they did a good job late and played good defense. It was just sort of a reverse of yesterday."

Nebraska did all its scoring in the fourth inning when it had three of its seven hits in the game to take a 2-0 lead. Left fielder Kale Kiser, who ended the top of the fourth by saving a run with a spectacular backhanded diving catch, led off the inning with a single to left field. After he was sacrificed to second by Bryan Peters, Asche delivered an RBI single to left center to score Kiser. Asche then advanced to second on a groundout by Kash Kalkowski and was driven in by Kurt Farmer's RBI single up the middle to make it 2-0.

Kansas State responded with single runs off Nebraska starter Jon Keller in the fifth and sixth innings. Keller went 5.1 innings and gave up two runs on six hits while throwing 100 pitches. Kansas State starter Matt Applegate went 6.1 innings before James Allen (2-1) held the Huskers scoreless the rest of the way to pick up the win. The loss was dealt to Dylan Vogt (2-1).

Vogt, who was strong in relief in the series opening victory, gave up only a run in 3.0 innings, but it proved to be the game winner when King took a 2-1 pitch into the right field bullpen to put KSU ahead 3-2 in the eighth inning. Nebraska had a hit off Allen in each of the last two innings but left both those runners on base as its comeback effort fell short.

Kansas State outhit Nebraska, 9-7, and each team committed one error. Wildcat outfielder Nick Martini went 0-for-5 on the afternoon and saw his NCAA record streak of 93 straight games reaching base come to an end.
