Husker tie up series with win

Lawrence, Kan — Cody Asche went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to give the Huskers an early lead, while four relievers held the Jayhawks to one run over the final 6.1 innings as Nebraska (21-12, 3-5) picked up a 4-2 win at Kansas (14-17, 5-6) on Saturday afternoon. The teams will play the rubber match at Hoglund Ballpark on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Behind Vogt's second win and Hauptman's third save, Nebraska improved to 16-0 when leading after six innings. Vogt relieved NU start Jon Keller with two outs in the third and gave up only a run in the seventh before Hauptman later came and retired six of the seven batters he faced to maintain the 4-2 win.

"It was a tight ballgame from the beginning," head coach Mike Anderson said. "I think we've played three of our last four games well. Yesterday was disappointing but we've done some good things. We've played good, fundamental baseball. The difference was the end was better today."

Asche had his fourth straight multiple hit game and 17th of the season, highlighted by a 2-RBI double down the right field line in the third that scored Kale Kiser and Tanner Krietemeier. Keller gave up a single run in the bottom half of the inning that cut Nebraska's lead to 2-1 and ended his day after a 2.2 inning outing in which he allowed one run on four hits.

Nebraska extended its lead to 4-2 in the fifth after loading the bases with none out. Kash Kalkowski grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to score Kiser before Kurt Farmer ripped a single down the third base line to bring home Peters.

That was all the offense the Husker pitching staff needed, as Tyler King also retired the only two batters he faced to get NU out of trouble in seventh when KU had scored one and had a runner on second with one out.

Peters and Asche combined for four of Nebraska's seven hits as Peters finished hit safely for the fourth straight game and finished 2-for-5. The Huskers were outhit 10-7, giving NU its second straight Big 12 win when being outhit by its opponent.

Anderson announced after the game that Logan Ehlers will start Sunday's game. Ehlers, a freshman left handed pitcher from Nebraska City, Neb., will be making his first career start.

The Huskers and Jayhawks will continue the series Saturday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark at 2 p.m.
