Kansas pounds Huskers, 14-3
Lincoln --
The Jayhawks spoiled the Huskers’ Dedication Day ceremonies in the opener of a Sunday doubleheader, scoring six runs in the second off NU starter Jamie Rodrigue and never looking back in a 14-3 win.
KU, which snapped a seven-game losing streak, knocked Rodrigue (5-2) out of the contest in the second stringing together five hits with the big blow coming on Cole Armstrong’s two-run double.
NU trimmed the Jayhawk lead to 7-3 in the third on a balk that scored Joe Simokaitis and a two-run homer by Matt Hopper, who had three of the Huskers’ five hits, but Dan Olsen shut the Huskers down, pitching 8.2 innings of six-hit ball to improve to 4-3 on the year. The KU starter struck out six and didn’t allow an earned run, as NU was held hitless for the final 4.1 innings.
Kansas’ bats didn’t waste Olsen’s strong outing, as the Jayhawks pounded out 17 hits, including four by Ryan Klocksein and three hits apiece from Casey Spanish, Ryan Baty and Kevin Wheeler. Klocksein and Baty added solo homers in the win, handing NU just its third home loss in third home loss in 21 games.
