Lincoln --
Second baseman
Jeff Blevins went 3-for-4 and tied his career high with five RBIs, as the
eighth-ranked Nebraska baseball team opened up Hawks Field with a 23-1 victory
over Nebraska-Kearney in front of a crowd of 3,412 Tuesday afternoon.
Blevins, a senior from Sand Spring, Okla.,
also belted the first homer in Hawks Field history, a three-run shot in
the fourth inning, as the Huskers broke open a 2-1contest with six runs
in the fourth and 11more in the fifth, capitalizing on 13 walks by UNK
pitching.
The Huskers, who have won four straight
and six of their last seven to move to 7-3 on the season, pounded out
18 hits, including three each by designated hitter Jed Morris (Seabrook,
Texas) and third baseman Brandon Eymann (Papillion, Neb.), while Morris
and right fielder Drew Anderson drove in four runs apiece in the win.
Six Husker pitchers combined to throw a
two-hitter and struck out 13 in the win NU allowed only one run, Eric
West's RBI double in the fourth inning. Sophomore Dustin Timm (Yutan,
Neb.) picked up his first career win, throwing two innings of one-hit
ball with three strikeouts to improve to 1-1 on the season. After West's
double, Husker hurlers retired the last 15 Lopers in order in lowering
their team ERA to 2.54.
NU Coach Dave Van Horn was pleased with
the Huskers' first performance in the 6,000-seat ballpark after 23 seasons
at Buck Beltzer Stadium. Hawks Field, as well as the adjacent Bowlin Softball
Stadium is part of the $29.53 million dollar Haymarket Park complex in
downtown Lincoln.
"More than anything, I think it was good
for us to play at home and for us to get a feel for the new park," Van
Horn said. "I think it was great day for baseball here to see over 3,000
fans come out on a Tuesday afternoon. It's a different feeling than when
you scrimmage here, and we wanted to get out and play in front somebody
in front of a crowd."
Travis Boyll, who had UNK's only other hit,
a first-inning single, took the loss, allowing eight runs on six hits
in four innings to drop to 0-2. The Lopers are now winless in five games
this season.
Nebraska's 23 runs was its highest single-game
total since scoring an NCAA record 50 runs against Chicago State on March
16, 1999. The Huskers, who have not played its in-state rival since 1999,
have now won 41 of the 42 meetings in the series.
The Huskers, who have won 10 straight games
at home dating back to last season, return to action this Friday, when
NU travels to Waco, Texas, to take on No. 14 Baylor. Friday's first pitch
is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the Pinnacle
Sports Radio Network.
