Lubbock, Texas -- Junior
All-American Shane Komine earned his 20th career win as a Husker as
Nos. 12/15 Nebraska defeated Texas Tech 3-2 in front of 2,600 fans
at Dan Law Field in Lubbock, Texas this evening. Komine pitched a
complete game striking out 10 including the final batter keying the
Huskers to victory.
NU (7-3, 1-0) exploded
in the first, scoring all three of their runs on five hits, but Tech
(12-7, 0-1) was able to cool the Husker bats, as the Red Raider pitching
staff only allowed four more hits the rest of the game.
Sophomore first baseman
Matt Hopper extended his hitting streak to 11 games, dating back to
last season with a two-run double in the first and NU never looked
back.
Tech threatened the Huskers
in the ninth, putting runners on first and second with two outs in
the bottom of the inning, but Komine struck Tech right fielder Kerry
Hodges out looking to end the game. Tech left a total of 10 runners
on, leaving two on in the second and third as well.
Nebraska head coach Dave
Van Horn was pleased with the Husker victory.
"I thought it was
a great ball game today," Van Horn said. "Our guys came
out of the gate strong, swinging that bat right away. Tech played
great defense today and held us after the first inning, making some
good plays in the field. Tech is a hard place to play and we were
able to win here."
Komine was pleased with
his effort and credited his teammates.
"I thought that we
fought hard today," Komine said. "We made the big plays
and went out and got the first win."
NU pounded out three runs
on nine hits off Tech starting pitcher Brandon Metzler, driving Metzler
to the shower after 5.1 innings.
The Huskers and the Red
Raiders will hook up again tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. for game two
of a three-game series.
